How to Fix Laptop Overheating
Step-by-step guide to diagnosing and fixing an overheating laptop. Covers software fixes, vent cleaning, thermal paste replacement, and when to get professional help.
Your laptop is hot to the touch, the fans sound like a small jet engine, and everything is starting to lag. We have been there. It is one of the most common laptop problems, and it almost always gets worse over time if you ignore it.
Most overheating issues have straightforward fixes. Some take less than a minute. Others require opening up the laptop, but nothing here is beyond a patient beginner with a screwdriver.
We will start with the easiest fixes and work our way up to the more involved ones. Try each step in order and test after each one. The cheapest and quickest fixes are deliberately first.

Move your laptop to a hard, flat surface
Before you try anything else, check where your laptop is sitting. Beds, couches, pillows, and blankets block the air vents on the bottom and sides of your laptop, trapping heat inside the case. This is not a minor thing. Microsoft recommends using a hard, flat surface that allows airflow underneath. Apple says the same and specifically warns against using a MacBook in bed or on a pillow. A desk or table is ideal. If you need to use your laptop on the couch, put a large hardcover book or a lap desk underneath it so the vents stay clear.
Good to know: Check where the vents are on your specific laptop model. Some exhaust out the back, some out the sides, and some pull air through the bottom. Make sure none of those openings are blocked.
Check for power-hungry programs
A single runaway process can pin your CPU at 100% and generate a lot of unnecessary heat. The fix takes about 30 seconds. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and look for the "Power usage" and "Power usage trend" columns. The trend column averages power consumption over the last two minutes, so it gives you a more stable reading than the real-time column. If something shows "Very High" consistently, that program is probably the problem. Right-click it and choose End task. On Mac, open Activity Monitor from Applications, then Utilities. Click the CPU tab and sort by % CPU. If a process is using a large share of CPU and you do not recognize it, select it and click the X button in the toolbar to quit it. Check for browser tabs too. A single tab running a complex web app or autoplaying video can eat more CPU than you would expect.
Adjust your power settings
Your laptop does not need to run at full power all the time. Dialing back the performance profile reduces heat output noticeably. On Windows 11, go to Settings, then System, then Power and Battery, and set Power Mode to "Best power efficiency" or "Balanced" instead of "Best performance." For a more targeted fix, open Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Power Options. Click "Change plan settings" on your active plan, then "Change advanced power settings." Expand "Processor power management" and set "Maximum processor state" to 75%. Your laptop will run a little slower, but it will run a lot cooler. On Mac, click the Apple menu, then System Settings, then Battery. Turn on "Low Power Mode." This reduces peak performance but significantly cuts heat and extends battery life. This is especially useful on older laptops where the cooling system cannot keep up with full-throttle workloads anymore.
Good to know: If you need full performance for specific tasks like video editing, switch back to "Best performance" or "High Power" mode for those sessions and drop back to balanced when you are done.
Clean the vents and fans with compressed air
Dust is one of the biggest reasons laptops overheat over time. It builds up on vents, fan blades, and heatsink fins, gradually choking off airflow until the cooling system cannot keep up. Shut down your laptop completely and unplug it. Take it somewhere well-ventilated (outdoors is great). Hold a can of compressed air at an angle and blow short bursts into each vent opening. Do not stick the nozzle deep inside. Do not hold the trigger down for a long continuous blast. If you can see the fan through the vents, hold it in place with a toothpick or small stick while you blow air through it. Letting the fan spin freely from the compressed air can actually damage the bearings. Do this every three to six months, or more often if you have pets, live in a dusty environment, or use your laptop on fabric surfaces regularly.
Heads up: Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean laptop vents. Vacuums generate static electricity that can damage internal components. Stick with compressed air.
Elevate the back of your laptop
Most laptops pull cool air in from the bottom and push hot air out through the back or sides. Raising the rear by even a centimeter or two improves airflow significantly. You can buy a laptop stand for this, but you do not have to. A small book, a couple of rubber erasers, or even a pair of bottle caps taped to the back rubber feet will create enough clearance. A dedicated cooling pad with built-in fans takes this a step further. You set your laptop on top and the fans blow cool air directly into the bottom vents. They are especially useful for gaming laptops that generate a lot of sustained heat.
Update your drivers and BIOS
Outdated firmware can cause fans to run at the wrong speeds or prevent the CPU from throttling properly. Manufacturers release BIOS and driver updates that fix exactly these kinds of thermal management issues. Go to your laptop manufacturer's support page (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, etc.), enter your model number, and check for BIOS updates and chipset driver updates. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully because a failed BIOS update can cause serious problems. On Windows, also check Device Manager for any drivers with warning icons. Right-click them and choose "Update driver." Windows Update sometimes includes firmware and driver updates too, so run that as well. On Mac, software updates include firmware automatically. Click Apple menu, then System Settings, then General, then Software Update.
Heads up: Never interrupt a BIOS update. Keep your laptop plugged in and do not close the lid until the update finishes completely. A failed BIOS flash can make your laptop unbootable.
Replace the thermal paste (advanced)
Thermal paste sits between your CPU and its heatsink, filling microscopic gaps that would otherwise trap air. Over time it dries out, hardens, and stops conducting heat effectively. PCWorld recommends replacing it approximately every three to four years. The signs are clear. If your laptop used to idle at 40 degrees Celsius and now sits at 50 or higher with no change in workload, dried thermal paste is a likely culprit. To replace it, you need to open your laptop's back panel, remove the heatsink, clean off the old paste with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, apply a small pea-sized dot of fresh paste to the CPU die, and carefully reseat the heatsink. Arctic MX-6 is a solid all-around choice for replacement paste. Apply it in a small dot in the center of the chip and let the heatsink pressure spread it naturally. Do not spread it manually.
Heads up: Opening your laptop may void the warranty. Check your warranty status before you start. If your laptop is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer instead and describe the overheating symptoms.
Check if the fans are actually working
If your laptop is hot and you cannot hear or feel any air coming out of the vents, a fan may have failed. Put your hand near the exhaust vent while the laptop is under load (running a game, exporting a video, or anything that makes the CPU work). You should feel warm air being pushed out. If the laptop is hot but there is no airflow, or if you hear clicking, grinding, or rattling sounds from inside, one or more fans may be failing. On Windows, some manufacturers include fan diagnostic tools in their support apps (Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant). Run the hardware diagnostics if available. A failing fan usually needs to be replaced. If your laptop is under warranty, this is a warranty repair. If it is out of warranty, replacement fans for most popular laptop models are available online for $10 to $30, but the installation requires opening the laptop and handling ribbon cables carefully. If you are not comfortable with that, a local repair shop can do it for a reasonable price.
Laptop overheating is almost never a death sentence. Dust buildup, a bad surface, and a power-hungry program running in the background are the usual causes. The fixes are simple and the tools are cheap. If you have worked through every step here and your laptop is still running hot, it is probably time for a professional to take a look. A failing component or a design flaw in the cooling system is beyond what you can fix at home, and there is no shame in that. The best thing you can do going forward is keep the vents clean, use a hard surface, and check Task Manager or Activity Monitor every now and then for anything that is eating more CPU than it should.

Modern laptop CPUs are designed to handle high temperatures. Intel processors have a maximum junction temperature (TjMax) of 100 to 110 degrees Celsius depending on the model, and AMD Ryzen CPUs can safely run up to about 95 degrees. Your laptop will automatically throttle performance or shut down before reaching temperatures that cause damage. If your CPU regularly hits the throttle point during normal tasks like web browsing or document editing, your cooling system needs attention.
Yes. Sustained high temperatures degrade internal components over time. Microsoft warns that prolonged heat exposure can damage the processor and storage drive, and it accelerates battery degradation, reducing capacity and lifespan. The damage is gradual, not instant. A laptop that runs hot for months will not suddenly break, but its components will age faster than they should.
Charging generates some heat from the battery, but it is usually minor compared to the heat your CPU and GPU produce under load. If your laptop only gets unusually hot while charging, the battery or charging circuit may need inspection. For most people, using a laptop while plugged in is completely normal and not a significant heat source.
Every three to four years is a reasonable interval. Stock thermal paste can start drying out after a year or two, while higher-quality options last longer. If your laptop's idle temperatures have risen noticeably since it was new and cleaning the vents did not help, the thermal paste is probably the issue. Keep in mind that opening the laptop may void your warranty.
They help, but they are not a fix on their own. A cooling pad improves airflow to the bottom vents and can lower temperatures by a few degrees. They work best as a complement to other fixes like cleaning dust from the vents and using balanced power settings. If your laptop has a fundamental cooling problem like dried thermal paste or a failing fan, a cooling pad will not solve it.
