How to Use Jumper Cables

Learn the correct order to connect jumper cables safely. Step-by-step guide covering terminal identification, connection sequence, grounding, and what to do after the jump.

A dead battery always picks the worst possible moment. You are running late, it is dark, it is raining, and the engine makes that awful clicking sound instead of turning over. If you have a set of jumper cables and a willing neighbor, you can be back on the road in under ten minutes.

The catch is that jumper cables have a specific connection order, and getting it wrong is not just ineffective. It can damage expensive electronics in both cars or, in rare cases, cause the battery to spark near flammable gas. None of that is hard to avoid once you know the sequence.

This guide walks through every step from positioning the cars to driving away with a charged battery. We will cover which clamp goes where, why the last connection is the most important one to get right, and what to do if the car still will not start.

Park both cars nose to nose and turn everything off

Pull the working car close enough that the cables can reach both batteries. In most cars the battery is under the hood near the front, so nose-to-nose or side-by-side works best. Leave about 18 inches of space between the vehicles. They should not be touching. Shift both cars into park (or first gear for a manual) and engage the parking brake. Turn off both engines, headlights, radios, and climate controls. Remove the keys from both ignitions. Pop both hoods and prop them open. Before you touch anything, take a quick look at both batteries. If either one is cracked, leaking, bulging, or has a strong rotten-egg smell, stop here. AAA says the same, and it is the one point in this whole process where the right answer is to walk away. A damaged battery can explode under charge. Call roadside assistance instead.

Heads up: Never try to jump a battery that looks frozen, swollen, or is leaking fluid. A fully discharged battery can freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and jumping a frozen battery risks an explosion.

Identify the positive and negative terminals on both batteries

Every car battery has two metal posts sticking out of the top or side. One is positive, one is negative. Getting them mixed up can damage both vehicles, so take a second to confirm which is which. The positive terminal is marked with a + sign or the letters POS. It usually has a red cap or red wire attached. The negative terminal is marked with a sign or NEG and typically has a black cap or black wire. If corrosion is covering the markings, the positive post is slightly larger in diameter than the negative one. Brush off any white or green buildup with a dry cloth or old toothbrush so the clamps make solid contact. Good contact matters. A loose or corroded connection can prevent enough current from flowing.

Connect the red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal

Uncoil your jumper cables and separate the red pair from the black pair so the metal clamps are not touching each other. Pick up one of the red (positive) clamps. Open the clamp, place it squarely over the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery, and let it grip tightly. Wiggle it to make sure it is secure and making full metal-to-metal contact. Set the other three clamps down on a non-metal surface like rubber, plastic, or cardboard so nothing accidentally shorts.

Good to know: Remember the connection order as "red, red, black, ground." Positive terminals first, negative side second, and the very last clamp never touches the dead battery.

Connect the other red clamp to the good battery’s positive terminal

Walk the cable over to the working car. Take the red clamp on the other end and attach it to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery. Same idea: squeeze the clamp open, press it onto the terminal, and make sure it grips tightly. You now have a red cable connecting the two positive terminals. The black cable should still be hanging free with both clamps untouched.

Connect one black clamp to the good battery’s negative terminal

Pick up one of the black (negative) clamps. Attach it to the negative (−) terminal of the working car’s battery. Press it on firmly until it grips. Three of the four clamps are now connected. The last one is the most important to get right.

Connect the last black clamp to bare metal on the dead car

This is the step most people get wrong. The final black clamp does not go on the dead battery’s negative terminal. Instead, attach it to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block or chassis. Good grounding points include an engine bolt, a metal bracket, or part of the vehicle frame. Look for clean, bare metal as far from the battery as the cable allows. The reason: batteries produce small amounts of hydrogen gas while charging. If a spark happens right next to the battery, that gas can ignite. By grounding the final clamp away from the battery, any spark occurs in a safe location.

Heads up: Battery acid and sparks are both eye hazards, and this final connection is when a spark is most likely. AAA recommends wearing eye protection and gloves before you touch anything under the hood. Safety glasses live in the same bag as our cables now, because the one time it matters is the time you will not have them.

Start the working car and let it idle for a few minutes

Start the engine of the working car and let it idle. This sends charge through the cables into the dead battery. For a mildly discharged battery, 2 to 3 minutes is usually enough. If the dead battery was completely flat (no dome light, no dashboard lights at all), wait 5 to 10 minutes. In cold weather, lean toward the longer end since battery chemistry slows down in low temperatures. Holding the donor engine at a fast idle, somewhere around 1,500 to 2,000 RPM, does help. An alternator produces more current the faster its rotor spins, and at a normal idle it is putting out well under what it is capable of. Light steady pressure on the accelerator is enough. Do not floor it, and do not blip the throttle up and down, which achieves nothing.

Try starting the dead car

Turn the key (or press the start button) in the dead car. Crank for no more than 10 seconds at a time. If it does not start, wait 2 to 3 minutes and try again. If the engine cranks slowly but does not catch, the battery may need more charge time. Wait another 5 minutes with the working car idling, then try once more. If nothing happens after 3 attempts, the problem is likely not the battery. It could be a failed starter, a blown fuse, or a deeper electrical issue. Stop trying and call for professional help. Repeated cranking with jumper cables attached can overheat the cables and damage the starter motor.

Disconnect the cables in reverse order

Once the dead car is running, remove the cables in the exact opposite order you connected them: 1. Remove the black clamp from the engine block or chassis (the grounding point). 2. Remove the black clamp from the good battery’s negative terminal. 3. Remove the red clamp from the good battery’s positive terminal. 4. Remove the red clamp from the previously dead battery’s positive terminal. Keep each clamp from touching any metal or the other clamp as you remove it. Set them down on a dry, non-conductive surface until you can coil the cables back up. Do not turn off the revived car yet. It needs to run.

Good to know: A simple way to remember the disconnect order: last on, first off. The grounding clamp was the last one you attached, so it comes off first.

Drive the revived car for at least 30 minutes

A jump start gets the engine running, but the battery is still mostly empty. The alternator needs time to push charge back into it, and it works harder at driving speed than at idle. AAA puts the minimum at 30 minutes, and highway or steady-speed driving beats stop-start traffic because the alternator spends more of that time spinning fast. Turn off non-essential electronics like heated seats, the stereo, and air conditioning to let the alternator focus on the battery. After your drive, consider getting the battery tested at any auto parts store. Most do it for free. A battery older than 3 to 4 years that needed a jump is often on its way out. Replacing it now is cheaper than another roadside surprise. Finally, wipe down your jumper cables with a dry rag, coil them loosely so the clamps do not scratch each other, and stash them back in your trunk. You never know when you or someone else will need them next.

The whole process takes less than 10 minutes once you know the order. Red to dead, red to good, black to good, black to bare metal. Disconnect in reverse. Drive for half an hour. Batteries emit small amounts of hydrogen gas, which is flammable. When you complete the circuit by attaching the final clamp, a small spark is normal. By grounding that clamp to the engine block instead of the battery, the spark happens away from the gas. This prevents the rare but real risk of a battery explosion.

Yes. The voltage in a car battery (12 volts) is far too low to travel through rainwater and cause a shock. As long as the cable clamps and battery terminals are reasonably dry and the cables are not frayed or damaged, jumping in the rain is safe. Avoid standing in deep puddles while working under the hood.

For standard passenger cars, 4-gauge cables are a solid choice. For trucks, SUVs, or diesel engines, go with 2-gauge. Thicker cables (lower gauge number) carry more current and work faster. Get cables at least 16 feet long so you have flexibility when the cars cannot park perfectly nose to nose.

It can if done incorrectly. Reversing the polarity (connecting red to negative) can fry fuses, airbag modules, and engine control units. Following the correct connection order and avoiding reverse polarity makes the risk very low. Disconnecting cables while the donor engine is revving can also create voltage spikes, so always disconnect at idle.

A dead battery typically causes slow, labored cranking or a rapid clicking sound when you turn the key. The dashboard lights may be dim or absent. If the lights and radio work normally but the engine will not turn over at all, the problem is more likely a bad starter or a blown fuse rather than the battery.
