How to Delete Your Reddit Account
Delete your Reddit account for good on desktop, iPhone, or Android, after downloading your data, deleting the posts you want gone, and canceling Reddit Premium.
You will end up with your Reddit data downloaded, the posts and comments you want gone deleted, Reddit Premium canceled, and your account permanently deleted, in that order. The order matters, because Reddit says deleting the account neither deletes your posts and comments nor cancels Premium.
Reddit is still growing. In its results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the company reported 130.3 million daily active uniques and 514.6 million weekly, the first time it had crossed half a billion a week. The preparation can take longer than the deletion, because Reddit says a data request may take up to 30 days. Once the account is deleted, Reddit says it cannot be reactivated and your username becomes unavailable. We checked these steps against Reddit's Help Center articles in September 2026.
Request a copy of your data
Before you delete anything, grab a copy of everything Reddit has on you. Once your account is gone, you lose access to your post history, saved items, messages, and settings permanently. Open a browser and go to reddit.com/settings/data-request. Log in if prompted, then click Submit. When your data is ready, Reddit sends a download link to your Reddit inbox, or in some cases to your verified email address.
Heads up: Reddit says a data request may take up to 30 days to prepare, and its request form only works while you are logged in to the account. A deleted account can no longer log in, so submit the request well before you plan to delete your account. If you cannot wait, Reddit says your posts, comments, votes, and account preferences are also viewable in your account at any time.
Delete your posts and comments first
This step is optional, but important if you care about privacy. Deleting your account does not delete your content. Reddit says your posts and comments stay on Reddit, but people can no longer see who they came from. The text itself stays up for anyone to read. If you have a handful of posts, you can delete them manually. Open your profile, go to Posts or Comments, tap the three-dot menu on each one, and select Delete. If you have years of activity, use Reddit's own route. Its help articles on deleting a post or comment say that if you cannot delete a large number of them by hand, email redditdatarequests@reddit.com from the email address you verified on your Reddit account. Do this before you delete the account. Third-party tools such as Redact or the Nuke Reddit History browser extension can bulk-delete too, but Reddit warns that third-party deletion tools are not officially supported and may not work as intended. If you use one, check your profile's Posts and Comments tabs afterward to confirm the content is gone.
Good to know: Overwriting your comments with new text before deleting them is more thorough than deleting alone, because anything that reads Reddit after the edit sees the new text rather than the original. What third-party archives do with an edit afterward depends on the archive, and is not something you get to control. Treat anything you posted publicly as copied somewhere.
Cancel Reddit Premium if you have it
Reddit says deleting your account will not cancel your Reddit Premium subscription, so cancel it first, wherever you bought it. If you paid by card or PayPal, go to reddit.com, open your Account Settings, and cancel from the Reddit Premium section there. If you subscribed through the App Store on iPhone, cancel in your phone's Settings, then tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. Apple renamed the Apple ID menu to your Apple Account in iOS 18, so there is no Apple ID entry to look for anymore. If you subscribed through Google Play on Android, cancel in the Play Store under Subscriptions.
Heads up: Reddit's rule is to cancel at least 24 hours before the subscription ends to avoid renewal, and it gives no partial refunds.
Delete your account on desktop
Open reddit.com in your browser and log in. Click your profile avatar in the top-right corner and select Settings. Scroll down to the Advanced section at the bottom of the page. Click Delete Account. Reddit will ask you to enter your username and password to confirm. If you signed up with Google or Apple and never set a password, create one first, as FAQ 7 below shows. There is also a checkbox that says "I understand that deleted accounts aren't recoverable." Check it. Before the last click, make sure steps 1 to 3 are done, because none of them can be done afterward and there is no undo. Reddit says a deleted account cannot be reactivated and its administrators cannot bring it back. Then click the final Delete button, and your account is deleted.
Heads up: On Old Reddit, the delete tab of your preferences does the same thing. Enter your username and password and confirm before you click delete account.
Delete your account on iPhone instead
If you prefer to do this from your phone, open the Reddit app on your iPhone. Tap your avatar to open your profile page. Tap the menu (three lines) near the top right, then tap Settings. Scroll down to Support and tap Delete account. Make sure steps 1 to 3 are done first, because there is no undo. Enter your password when prompted and confirm the deletion. The result is identical to the desktop method. Your account is permanently removed on the spot.
Delete your account on Android instead
Open the Reddit app on your Android phone. Tap your avatar at the top right to open your profile page, tap the menu (three lines) near the top right, then tap Settings. Tap Account settings for u/yourname. Scroll to the very bottom and tap Delete account. Make sure steps 1 to 3 are done first, because there is no undo. Confirm with your password. Same as desktop and iPhone, the deletion is immediate and irreversible.
If you are not sure you want to leave for good, log out and leave the account dormant instead, because Reddit's administrators cannot bring a deleted account back. If you still find your old posts after deleting, that is expected, because Reddit keeps them on the site without your username. No. Reddit's help pages describe no grace period after you confirm, and Reddit says its administrators will not be able to bring a deleted account back for you. Contacting support will not restore it.

No. Your username is permanently retired. Nobody, including you, can create a new account with the same username. If you want to keep the username, leave the account dormant instead of deleting it.
Reddit says your messages and chats stay on Reddit, but people can no longer see who they came from. The other person can still see the message content. You cannot retroactively delete messages after your account is gone.
If you are the sole moderator of a subreddit, the subreddit becomes unmoderated after your account is deleted. Other users can then request moderation rights by posting in r/redditrequest, which is Reddit's route for taking over an unmoderated community. If there are other moderators, they continue managing the subreddit normally.
Reddit's own deletion page says that once you delete, it starts "a deletion process which commences within 90 days to safely remove or anonymize your account from our servers." That is when the process starts, and Reddit gives no date for when it finishes. Your public posts and comments are not affected by this process since they have already been disassociated from your identity.
You need your password to confirm the deletion. If you have forgotten it, go to reddit.com/password and request a reset link to your email. If you signed up with Google or Apple and never set a password, disconnect that sign-in under Account authorization in your account settings and Reddit will ask you to create one. If you signed up with a phone number, the app sends a 6-digit code instead. Without access to any of these you are stuck, because Reddit states that its administrators cannot delete an account on your behalf.
