How to Delete Your Instagram Account
How to permanently delete or temporarily deactivate your Instagram account. What happens to your data, and what to do before you pull the trigger.
Deleting Instagram is not as straightforward as you might expect. The option sits several menus deep inside the Meta Accounts Center rather than in Instagram's own settings list, which is where you would expect to find it. Instagram makes you navigate several menus and confirm multiple times before actually doing it. The process clearly is not designed to be quick.
There is also an important distinction between deleting and deactivating. Deleting is permanent. Your account, photos, followers, likes, and comments are gone forever after a 30-day grace period. Every post you ever shared, every story highlight, every saved collection disappears. Deactivating is temporary. Your profile disappears from public view but everything is preserved behind the scenes, and you can reactivate at any time by simply logging back in.

Download your data first
Before deleting or deactivating, download a complete copy of your account data. Open Instagram, go to Settings > Your Activity > Download Your Information. Select your account, choose the file format (HTML is easier to browse on your computer, JSON is better for data portability and importing into other services), and select a date range or "All time" for everything. Click Request Download. Instagram will prepare the file and email you a download link within 48 hours, though it often arrives within a few hours. The download includes all your photos and videos in their uploaded resolution, stories, reels, messages, comments, profile information, search history, and login activity. The file can be several gigabytes if you have been active for years. Save it to a hard drive or cloud storage before proceeding.
Save any content you want to keep individually
The data download gives you a bulk archive, but the files are organized by type (all photos in one folder, all videos in another), not organized by post with captions. If you want specific photos or videos in a more usable format, save them individually before proceeding. Open each post you care about, tap the three dots menu, and select Save to save it to your phone's camera roll. For stories highlights, tap into each highlight on your profile page and save individual stories from there. One important detail that people miss is that saved posts (posts from other accounts that you bookmarked) are not included in the data download. If you have a collection of saved recipes, travel inspiration, or reference material, screenshot them or note the account names before proceeding.
To permanently delete, use the accounts center
Open Instagram and go to Settings > Accounts Center > Personal Details > Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion. You can also access this through a web browser at accountscenter.meta.com. Select your Instagram account, choose "Delete account," and follow the prompts. Instagram will ask you to select a reason for leaving, re-enter your password, and confirm. After confirmation, your account enters a 30-day grace period. During these 30 days, your profile is hidden but the deletion can be cancelled by logging back in.
Heads up: After the 30-day grace period, deletion is irreversible. Your username becomes available for anyone to claim, and none of your content can be recovered. If you log in during the 30 days, the deletion is automatically cancelled.
To temporarily deactivate instead
If you want a break without losing everything, deactivation is the better option. Go to Settings > Accounts Center > Personal Details > Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion. Select your Instagram account, choose "Deactivate account" instead of delete. Your profile, photos, comments, and likes are hidden from everyone. Nobody can find your profile or see your content. But everything is preserved. To reactivate, simply log back in with your username and password. Everything reappears exactly as you left it. You can deactivate once per week.
Revoke third-party app access
Before deleting or deactivating, review which apps and websites have access to your Instagram account. Go to Settings > Website Permissions (or Settings > Apps and Websites on older versions). You will see a list of active and expired connections. Revoke access for every app you no longer actively use by tapping Remove next to each one. This prevents third-party services from retaining or attempting to access your data after your account is gone. Common connections include social media management tools like Buffer or Hootsuite, photo printing services, loyalty programs, and games or quizzes that used Instagram login. Also check if you use your Instagram account to log in to any other websites or services. Those logins will stop working after deletion, so switch them to email-based logins first.
Understand what happens to your messages and interactions
When you delete your Instagram account, your side of direct message conversations is removed from your view. However, messages you sent to other people remain visible in their inbox. They will see the messages but your username will show as "Instagram User" instead of your name. Your profile picture disappears from those conversations. Group chats you were in continue without you. Comments you left on other people's posts are also removed. Likes you gave are removed. Tags of you in other people's photos are removed, though the photos themselves remain. If you deactivate instead of deleting, all of these interactions remain fully intact and reappear exactly as they were when you reactivate.
The whole process takes about 5 minutes once you know where to go. The hardest part is usually the decision itself, not the technical steps. If you are unsure, start with deactivation. After the 30-day grace period, your username becomes available for anyone to register. If you have a unique or desirable username, someone else could claim it. There is no way to reserve it after deletion. If you think you might want to return to Instagram someday, deactivation preserves your username.
Yes. Deleting Instagram does not affect your Facebook, WhatsApp, or Threads accounts, even if they are linked through Meta Accounts Center. Each account is deleted independently. However, if you use Instagram login for third-party apps, those connections will break.
Use the "Forgot password" link on the login page to reset it via email or phone number. If you no longer have access to the email or phone number on the account, you can request support through the Instagram Help Center. Without being able to verify your identity, Instagram cannot delete the account for security reasons.
After the 30-day grace period, Instagram begins deleting your data from their servers. This process can take up to 90 days to complete fully. During this time, your content is not visible to anyone but may exist in backup systems. Some information (like messages sent to other users) is retained in the recipient's account and is not deleted.
